Filed under: Economizer, House & Home, Saving, Going Green

With summers getting hotter and drier, homeowners should think about how they can conserve more water – in their homes and in the garden. It’s easy to put these practices to work and that will pay off big time when it comes to your water bills. This is especially true now that many municipalities are moving to a consumption based model, where homes are metered and charged accordingly.

In Toronto for example, a typical monthly bill for a single family home runs about 600 dollars. But the city has had a long-term plan to increase water rates by 9 per cent each year through 2012. And like everything else, water costs are only going to rise, so start saving with these easy-to-implement fixes.

Weird-Mart: Bizarre Tales from Walmart’s Aisles

From Daily Finance.com

A 47-year-old man was bitten by a rattlesnake in the outdoor garden department of a Walmart (WMT) store in Lewiston, Idaho, this week. The rattlesnake latched onto the man’s hand, prompting him to scream, shake the snake loose, and then stomp it to death.

A peculiar incident, yes, but hardly the first odd thing to occur at one of the retailer’s 3,878 U.S. locations: Strange things seem to happen in Walmart stores all the time.

True, Walmart is the United States’ biggest retailer, which gives it plenty of opportunities to play host to weird happenings, but even given that, the stores seem to exist in a parallel, Twilight Zone universe where such odd episodes are bound to ensue. One can almost picture Rod Serling in a blue Walmart vest, suavely greeting customers by the sliding doors, and introducing the strange tales about to unfold.

Click the image below to see a few of the bizarre incidents that have played out at Walmart stores.

smartphones are slowing downIt’s not as if smartphones were bidding good-bye, but their popularity has been sinking lately.

Thus a report by British international marketing research company, Intersperience.

Why? Simply because the technology hasn’t been keeping up with the Joneses, such as tablets, laptops, PCs, and other such paraphernalia.

What’s going on? Simple: smartphones’ access speed to the Internet hasn’t slowed down, but all the other equipment has found ways to speed up. And since we live in the era of institutionalized impatience, the dip in smartphone popularity has been inevitable.

A little extra money is always a good thing.

When I was a kid, I remember my Dad getting frustrated by my continued requests for things – he would ignore me for awhile, and then would say – so who’s going to pay for that?

With summer holidays soon upon us, parents are feeling the burden of their children’s wants and desires for summer, but does it have to be just Mum and Dad paying for everything?

Families who want to help kids understand the value of a loonie or toonie can make a plan to help everyone lean how to save money, and create a family slush fund.

Enter BizPaL. That’s an online business permit and licence service that saves time spent on paperwork and helps entrepreneurs start up faster.

While general readers might question the need for licences and permits in the first place, they exist. And so long as we do not raise a revolution against them, might as well make the process as efficient as possible.

“I had done the big wedding and gone and spent too much on other people,” said the retired Goldman Sachs exec.
